Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
My brothers wife shoots whitetail with a 243 in TX and LA, no problems even at 300 yards.

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
Unless he is a monster i would stick with the 243Win, Hell i would even look for a used 220 swift or a 22-250, with 60gr Nosler Partitions they will handle deer out to 150-200 yrds.

Stick with the .243. A .260 in some rifles carries a heavy "bite"

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
Is that one of the Ruger Compacts with the real short barrel, 16 inches or so? I've read the muzzle blast can be nasty with the short barrel. If you don't handload, 243 ammo is a lot more available.

I have a Rem. Model 7 with an 18" barrel. the rifle is not a fun gun to shoot. Lots of blast and more then moderate recoil.

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
THANK YOU all for your replys we re going to stick with the 243 it hasnt failed us yet. Hes killed more deer than me over the past three yrs i guess in this day and age when kids can start so early with there own gun by the time he got to be the age i got my 1st gun i felt he needed a new one.but why fix whats not broken . Can you find a higher grain than a 100 for a 243 without reloading and if you do reload is it smart to go higher than that and if it is how high should i go.THANKS AGAIN FOR YOUR REPLYS and by the way my 1st gun was a winchester 30-30 top eject didnt like useing sidemount for scope so dad gave me a marlin 30-30 he won in a raffel i hunted with it till high school and bought a rugger m77 308 that i still use from time to time still got all three i guess when hes ready he could always use 1 of them.I guess what it boils down to i was looking for a reason to buy a new gun.I even have a savge pump 30-30 he s been beging to use.

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
You really cant go wrong with the 100gr factory load for deer, in fact i load lighter bullets for my 243 for deer. you can handload 105 but most factory barrels do not have a fast enough twist to stabilize them.

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
My dad started me with a .243 for deer. After a few years he gave me a .270.

Re: hunting gun for 9yr old son
I used a 7-30 Waters the first time i hunted at 12.
After that I started using a Win M70 SA .243 Ranger Youth Model. very light and easy to maneuver
