National Guard
I have been looking into joining the National Guard and my wife and friends advised me I could not. This is due to several broken bones due to motorcycle riding and open heart surgery when I was six due to a birth defect. I am planning on contacting a recruiter after the holiday. But I was wondering if anyone knew if this would disqualify me and why?

Re: National Guard
It would depend on if there are long term or limiting effects of your injuries, there may be some limitations on some of the jobs you can get but I am not 100% sure on what kinds of injuries or conditions disqualify you.
Talk to the recruiter....and thank you for wanting to serve."Disperse you Rebels! Damn you! Throw down your Arms and Disperse!" British Major Pitcairn at Lexington April 19, 1775

Re: National Guard
Any pins in the broken bones? And as for the open heart surgery, some things can barr you from serving, my wife had cervical cancer and is at high risk of a reoccurance, therefore she can not enlist due to special medical needs that can not be guarenteed while on a deployment.
If you haven't had any other issues with your heart, you may be elgible, or not.
As for the "why" part, the Military pays for all medical, and as much as it sucks they don't want to pay for pre-existing issues. Also, basic training can be tough, if your heart can't take it...well, they don't like it when people die in basic training.
So don't be surprised if you have to sign some kind of waiver if you are eligable."We shoot to stop. ... Unfortunately, death can be a byproduct."

Re: National Guard
You may need to see a specialisit, your recruiter can probably tell you which to see, and they will be able to basically sign a doctor's note. If you have been seeing the same doctor over the past several years it will be a lot easier/cheaper to do.
The MEPS doctor will basically sign off on it. The military just dont' want to pay the $450K if you die.
