grandfathers rifle
I was just handed down a remington "model 6" that was bought by my grandfather at 7 years old, the stock is in good condition as is the reciever, the barrel has some corrosion, not to the point of pitting or anything but not as smooth as the blueing under the foregrip, my question is this. would it be worth getting this rifle restored? could i do it myself? also the reciever has what looks like rainbow coloring (maybe heat marks from manufacture?, i dont have much expeirience with older firearms so i dont know if this is coloring is normal or a result of age.....thanks for any help you could give.

Re: grandfathers rifle
I would not restore that rifle, I have a Remington Model 6 and that discoloration is case coloring and it is supposed to be that way don't try to alter its appearance. Clean it and enjoy shooting it. A rifle like that is better with age and wear in my opinion.

Welcome to the forum.
What you have is a family treasure. I wouldn't "refinish it", just clean it, and enjoy it.I called to check my ZIP CODE!....DY-NO-MITE!!!

Besides being a family treasure, the biggest "killer" (price wise) of older guns is refinishing them.

Re: grandfathers rifle
Anytime you "restore" a gun, it generally means refinishing it too. And anytime you refinish an older or collectible piece, you destroy just about any value that gun has. You might want to keep that in mind.

As others have said, leave it alone.
It's a hell of a feeling holding history in your hand, especially when it's a family hierloom. Your grandkids will appreciate it too.
