Default Wal-Mart asks for my firearm

I just got a Ruger 10/22 and need some ammo for it. Well as luck would have it my local Wal-Mart is well stocked in just about everything right now. As usually I am carrying concealed at the time. I got a box of .22LR and walked up to the check out and the lady scanned it and when the usual 'are you old enough to buy these' beep went off she asked me, "I am going to need your firearm."

I don't say anything at first and just look at her confused. She looks around nervously and says, "Umm... do you have a handgun... Uh..."

I scratch the top of my head and ask her, "I beg your pardon?"

She looks at the display on the register and then back at me, "The screen is asking for a handgun or something."

This is the first time I had bought .22LR at Wal-Mart and I knew it can be used in both rifles and small handguns. Apparently Wal-Mart asks the customer what type of firearm they are using this for, like it suddenly doesn't work in a handgun if you claim rifle. You have to be 18 to buy rifle and 21 for handgun ammo. It finally hits me and I respond rifle. She smiles and apologizes saying that this was her first day working as a cashier and she didn't know anything about "bullets and gun stuff".

Anyway no other issue, can't wait for tomorrow to give this thing a good shakedown. Sorry for the non-event story, I just thought it was funny.

What a slightly stupid but tolerable question to ask. I guess that was unecessary looking back!

That must be new. I just bought a brick of .22 at Wally World last month and and no questions were asked of any sort.

I'm not going to criticize a new employee for cluelessness. I'm sure she wasn't prepped for what she was doing, just told to go over and "bang on the buttons and take the money".

I'll see what happens the next time I go into Wal-Mart to buy some ammo, which isn't very often these days, since they generally don't have what I want.

While you are intitled to your opinion, refering to someone, that most likely was never trained properly, as a "dumb asshole" is uncalled for. Name calling of a non-gun person only makes us ALL look bad.

The best answer to the is this for a handgun? question is...

No it's for a submachinegun... I've told them that several times when asked about 9mm ammo...

If one includes things like Thomson Center Contender pistols pretty much any caliber is available for use in a handgun.

    Knowing how lazy programmers are...

The unit probably just said, "Handgun?...", or some shorthand question that would be hard to decipher unless someone explained it to you.

Say it's for a machine pistol. That way it is not known if it is a machine gun or pistol in classification!

    (eg. MP40, 9mm, MP = maschine pistole.)

ETA=Oh, BTW, the programmers will tell you it is more efficient to program that way!
It is you. You have all the weapons that you need. Now fight. --Sucker Punch
