Keeping tradition alive
My dad is on the downhill side of pancreatic cancer. He's made it 3 1/2 years, but I think the bad guys are getting closer. Our whole family hunts / shoots / goes fishing. I told him I would carry that on with my son. His way of helping me make sure I do was to buy him his own Henry lever action, 22 magnum. My son was as thrilled to get it as dad was to give it to him. It's his when he's old enough, but we all went for a first shoot with it. Getting the boy's feet wet so to speak. Took his first shot at about 10 yards and hit paper.

Re: Keeping tradition alive
Great seeing an amazing family tradition handed down like that. I'm sure it is a moment that your dad and son will treasure!

I'd frame that picture and the target if you still have it. Moments like that are rare. It'll be the kind of picture he keeps hanging in a spot of honor his whole life.

Re: Keeping tradition alive
Thanks for sharing, what a heart warming event. There is no value you can place on that gun now. I bet your son has that gun the rest of his life!

Re: Keeping tradition alive
Like St Marys said, he (your son) will never forget the moment he got that gun, and the way he felt that day. My deer rifle was a hand-me-down from my grandfather when I was about 15 or 16 years old after he let me borrow it for a week he told me to keep it... I was so excited, and I will never get rid of that rifle. Until, of course, my son/grandson needs a rifle to hunt with after I've gotten out of hunting...

Cherish the time you have with both your son and father, it goes quickly!
