Where can I find how much a pistol is worth?

I have a nice Colt 1991 that I would like to know how much I could expect to get for it (or insurance value). Is there any place on the web that I can do this?

Compare bid/going prices at online auctions, check pictures of the guns and compare to your for wear/finish/etc.

If you're out and about you can also go to your local Barnes & Noble bookstore. In the section that has the gun books they have copies of the Blue Book of Gun Values and other gun value books. This would give you some idea, although with the way guns are selling now these prices may seem low. However, if something were to happen to your insured guns, the insurance company probably is going to use these books, just like the auto insurance companies use the NADA book, etc. to figure out what you are going to get for your car if it's totaled. If for insurance reasons, take very good pictures so you can prove that it meets the condition shown in the books.

I was in Borders last night OC'ing with my brother and girlfriend. I was in the guns section and found the "blue book" of guns, i can't remember the name of it, but the book was red itself. Takes just a moment to locate your firearm and get a price, but it only shows the new in box price generally, you need to look up the mitigating factors in the legend of the book to find out anything more than that. Grab one of those coffee shakes and plop down and figure it out.

OK, I've done all you have suggested but still can't find the exact piece. I had some work done in the Colt custom shop when I ordered it and I do know there are others like it, but I can't find this exact pistol.

What kind of work did you have done at the custom shop? Engraving? If so, how much of the gun was engraved A, B, C, D? Was it Standard, Expert, or Master engraving? Was it signed? If not engraving, what was done? This will help to determine the value.

Gun Digest I think is the name of one but you can't miss the one that has to do with gun values, it's a big book and about 3 inches wide on the bottom shelf. I was in borders this morning and there is a lot of books on everything to do with guns, knives, training, etc. If you got one near you it's well worth checking out.
