Baby update NEW PICS and Fantastically GREAT News !!

Phew , can barely contain myself so this might ramble a bit , sorry

Last week we had to meet with a genetic counselor , because there were " markers " age being one of them , that were pointing to a possibility of increased risk of Downs Syndrome . Normal negative results from blood work are 1 in 271 . Stephs results were coming up at 1 in 66 . Now that REALLY freaked me out , because we know this is our last chance to have a child . 1 in 66 sounds like terrible odds to me , but the couselor tried to reassure by telling us to look at it from the perspective of percentage , which was 98% likely that everything was ok . But they did suggest an amniocentisis which brings about a whole nother set of marginal , but still present risks for a miscarriage .

This was a really difficult thing to wrestle with , again knowing its our last chance , how would we feel if things went south and we were responsible for it vs leaving things up to chance and 4 months of not knowing ???

Monday we decided we needed to know and went in for the amnio . Stephs regular OBGYN and the guy we both really like because he takes the time to listen to us wasnt available , nor was his mentor So if we we're going to get it done it had to be with a third Doc that just seemed to be "cold " and have no bedside manner the other two times we dealt with him .

We had expressed our concerns and the heavy weight on our minds regarding the situation to her regular OB Doc the week before and he assured us he and his team would have a conference about our case and advise us accordingly if the risks of the amnio werent necessary .

So this third Doc on Monday not only DIDNT take the time to "brief us " or counsel on what the consensus was , but then he drops the bomb that the most recent Ultrasound scan showed ANOTHER " marker " for Downs , a shade over on the skin thickness measurement at the back of the neck , which now changed the odds of Downs from 1 in 66 to 1 in 24 !!!

The news was alarming enough , but the "crisp " nature and body language and lack of concern for our mental well being was disturbing . At that point we decided to go ahead with the amnio . We were told the lab wouldnt have 100% confirmed results for 8 to 10 days , but they could do a " Rapid Response " test , looking for the extra chromosome and confirming sex within 3 days with 95% accuracy .

They also told us if there was going to be anything bad happening from the procedure such as infection or a ruptured sac , that we would know for sure within 24 -48 hours , then we would effectively be out of the woods as far as complications from the procedure go .

So we have been on pins and needles , barely sleeping or focusing on anything since Monday , fully expecting to have to wait till Friday at the earliest for the Rapid Response results .

Well I just got the call from the genetics lab office at 5:30 tonight and the results are .................................................. .................................................. ......







NO Downs Syndrome!!!!!!! NO extra chromosomes AND we're having a .................................................. .................................................. ............................. BOY !!!!!


Connor James Roberts ( CJ ) is expected to enter the world sometime this fall . Due date is projected to be Nov 4th ( Election Day hehe ! ) but we both expect he's probably gonna be early , either by Nature or by Doc orders , so we're thinking October .
