Re: would this be a good start?
I don't know your level of experience building guns, I'm guessing that given your question you are new at it. However if not, don't take this as my talking down to you, I've looked into building guns and decided it was over my own head personally.
What drove me away was the fact that...
This is quite an involved and potentially dangerous project. I've seen AKs built from parts kits, and unless you are an expert I would suggest you spend some time doing research on the SKS to ensure you will have sufficient knowledge and equipment to build said SKS, that said I have been told that an SKS is a good gun to start with if you are intent on building a gun as it is easier than the AK if you have the knowledge / resources.
I wouls start by making sure you have done the research on the SKS as a gun, and the variants of SKS (M59/66, SKS-M, SKS-D, 306 ect.) to know if parts are compatible, or to be able to identify the parts of the SKS you are building.
Also have you located resouces to acquire all of the parts you will need, and ensure the source is credible, so that if you purchase a trigger asssembly, or a bolt carrier, that they will be for a Yugo M59/66 and not a Chinese 306 or North Korean version (while I think they are compatible as rebuilds are often made of multiple variant parts, I can't say for sure if all variants have 100% interchangable parts.)
That said, if you do have the knowledge & resources, than this does appear to be a decent price on a barrel / receiver combo (although two years ago a Yugo M59/66 could be had for about $150 no assembly required.)
If it were me, I would search around for a Russian Tula in good shape (marked on the receiver cover with a star that has an arrow in it) and go out shooting.
Good luck whatever you decide.

Re: would this be a good start?
I would think that this would NOT be a good starting place to build an SKS.
A SKS can still be found at a reasonable price, and, if you start looking for pieces to puth this barreled receiver together, I think you would end up paying more to build a rifle off this than to just buy one.
What I see in the ad is probably a good replacement if the rifle you have is corroded, etc., and unshootable, but you have all the other "stuff" from a bad rifle to go with the one in the ad.
It would be a great price for a barreled receiver as long as you already have everything else.
I found a Norinco SKS in a pawn shop six months ago for $150.
To build off this rifled action, you would need: (numrich Arms pricing)
gas piston $37.25
handguard and gas cylinder 37.25
handguard, wood 23.00
piston extension 20.55
piston return spring 5.50
bolt assembly, original 57.90
trigger guard assembly, stamped 57.90
See where I'm going with this?
IF you have everything but what is in the pic, go for it.
If not, I'd leave it alone, you can find a good SKS ready to fire cheaper than you can build one.
I hope this answers your quesrion.

Re: would this be a good start?
I've never seen anyone selling an SKS parts kit. It would probably cost a lot more to put one together, than it would to just buy a complete rifle.
With the ATF barrel ban, $50 might not be a bad investment, but it's probably not the way to go if you just want to get your hands on an SKS now.Removed NRA Life Member pic. LaPierre and Chris Cox are ruining NRA.

oh theres parts available, and yes you can buy a complete gun cheaper,,,if you get lucky like i did and picked up a yugo sks for under 200 bucks. NIB too.
i was thinking of putting something together for the sake of doing it.Last edited by goofin; June 20th, 2009 at 06:58 PM.

Re: would this be a good start?
I would ask myself why is CFS selling barreled actions?
The only reason that comes to mind is the bore on these are pretty beat. They broke them down for parts and are now selling what is left.
Afterall they're not even chrome lined.
$50 plus FFL and transfer fees ... I think is not "a good start".
(and I'm a big fan of the SKS/smile)Please feel free to visit a forum that I moderate:

Re: would this be a good start?
2 weeks ago i couldnt find a decent sks that was affordable. I bought one for less than 200 bucks and today when i was out at the flea market, i came across a guy just sitting up. he had 2 mags so i grabbed them. was talking to him a little and ended up buying a chinese norinco sks with a bent gas tube for 50 bucks and he knows where i can get another one thats missing the furniture for 100 bucks. so in a short time i went from looking for one to owning 3.
now its time to stock up on ammoIf a conservative is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
