Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
Is anyone here a member of the Holmesburg club here who would be willing to give me a brief tour, maybe a bit of shooting, as their guest? Or do you know if I would be allowed to simply show up and get a guest pass, without being accompanied by a member?
The story: I finally graduated from college, am living back at home (in jersey), and decided to mail in my membership papers to the local club (Delran Junior Marksmanship Club). Its a nice club, only 10 minutes from my house, and i've shot there a few times before. Here comes the bad news though. A week after I mailed in my application, I got a call from the president of the club. He explained to me that the club is embroiled in a heated battle over some a couple rounds that a local business found on its roof, and is blaming on the club for them. The club is closed until further notice, and he seems to think that the town is looking for any excuse to shut them down permanently.
Anyways, there are precious few shooting clubs in New Jersey, and most of them are a decent drive from my house. The next closest club to me is Holmesburg Fish and Game (I live right near the tacony-palmyra bridge). I noticed on their website that they are waiving the new member initiation fee, so I am considering joining so I can get some range time in until the Delran club (hopefully) reopens. I would mostly be looking to shoot at the rifle range. I shoot mostly .22, with a bit of garand mixed in.
For anyone concerned about taking a stranger to the range, though I don't claim to be the best shot out in the world, I can usually keep within spitting distance of the bulls eye and I am 100% serious about safety (my brother actually makes fun of me for being so serious about it, I take the fun out of shooting for him). I've got no problem following any and all range rules. I've got NJ's FID card, if that does anything for you, as well.
I'd probably be looking to stop by one evening after work, or maybe on a weekend afternoon. No real hurry, just been a few months since I've been shooting now, and i'm aching to get some trigger time in.

Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
If you could possibly get over here on a Sat or Sun morning just go to the club and ask for Carmen. He is there every weekend morning and would be more then happy to help you out. They are decent people there but I just have an issue with a few of their rules concerning magazine limits and carrying my sidearm.

Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
The place sucks!
I friend is a member. He is only 18, so he shoots shot gun and rifle there. I have went with his three times. All the times where around 11am-1pm weekdays.
NEVER got to use the range.
Either the prison gaurds are there and they get all pissy at you trying to use the range, or NO ONE is there and the building is locked up tight.
Whenever my friend does get to shoot, he says its nothing but old guys who wont even talk to ya.
I would not go there again unless there was a cash reward!

Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
I haven't posted in a while, but I feel the need to weigh in.
First off, I am a happy member of Holmesburg.
The rules are indeed a bit fuddsy, but if you ask the RO he will always say yes to loading multiple rounds. They just don't want people dumping mags all over the place, and are VERY safety conscious due to the uncertainty regarding the club's continuity.
I have never had an issue with any other member of the club, and they are always willing to help out. In fact a group of other members put my tec-sights on my 10/22, when I was having issues.
I am a youngin' at 20, but I appreciate the older crowd. They are very knowledgeable and always willing to lend a hand. One gentleman allowed me to shoot his 45-70 , and another time tipped me off to the gas valve when I couldn't figure out why my m1a wasn't cycling.
I feel like it is a great organization that is located in philadelphia, and it has a lot to offer respectful and friendly gun owners.
Skeet Shooting is a way of life at the club, and the pistol range sees its fair share of use. The rifle range is generally, but not always, almost empty. Since I only shoot rifles...I love it .
One criticism is that only paper targets, with non-human prints, are allowed. It would be nice if the option to shoot other items was there, but I understand why it is not. One thing I do is pick up the whole or mostly whole clay pigeons I find, and prop them up on my target to shoot. I always pick up the pieces and put them with the others on the berm, or if I'm shooting 100 yards I just shoot them where they lie on the berm.“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquillity of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, — go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!” ~Samuel Adams
You cannot invade America. There is a rifle behind every blade of grass.” ~ Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto

Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
Nothing but a bunch of old fudds. Went there years ago with a friend who was a member. Followed all the rules but was warned about rapid firing. I was shooting at outdoor pistol range with a Sig P220 loaded with 185gr LSWC rounds. Fired 5 rounds in 5 seconds and had a two inch group. However that was considered to be rapid fire. I could see if I was some idiot spraying rounds all over, but obviously I knew what I was doing. When I went to the rifle range with a Marlin 336C and was told about the one round rule I had enough.

Re: Holmesburg Fish and Game Club
Lots o' Fudds.
They will gladly take your $100 membership fee, (this is assuming you "joined" during their Open house, where the $150 initiation fee is waived.) and then make you jump through hoops to use the facilities.
eg:
-You must QUALIFY in order to use the outdoor pistol range.
-You must QUALIFY in order to fire a muzzle-loading rifle. Additional requirements for firing a Flintlock.
-You must have, (or be accompanied by a member with), a PROFICIENCY card in order to use the indoor pistol range.
-Handguns are limited to FIVE rounds, in a magazine, or in a revolver.
-Pistol range is limited to 25 yards, except, four lanes can be used for 15 yards, with approval.
-Rifle range is limited to ONE ROUND ONLY!, to be loaded in any style of rifle.
-Rifle range is closed Tuesday through Friday, until 3:00pm, at the earliest!, due to training for the prison guards, US Navy (SP's), and other local LEO's.
The club is run-down, and patched together, for the most part, but it serves it's purpose, I suppose. Lots of competitive shooters, and matches are always going on. I found the club to be a bit rigid with their "Qualifications" required to shoot the various ranges. But, hey, if the majority of the membership voted on, and approved these rules, then so be it. It's just not for me. And after reading the initial post in this thread, I think I made the right choice.
Be certain to get a copy of the club rules and regulations before plopping down your cash for a membership. Have a member escort you around the grounds, and be sure to ask questions about 'qualifying' and 'proficiency' before you join.
PS...
During your first year of membership, you are on PROBATION. You can NOT nominate, vote, or sponsor a prospective member, during this PROBATIONARY period.
You MUST be a member of the NRA to become a member of Holmesburg Fish and Game Protective Association, the club.Last edited by louie; October 17th, 2011 at 05:38 PM.
