And you guys thought finding machine guns was big...

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (June 9) - Florida authorities say a commercial fisherman reeled in a live missile in the Gulf of Mexico and kept it on his boat for 10 days.
The sheriff's office in Pinellas County say the boat's captain, Rodney Soloman, hooked the air-to-air guided missile 50 miles off the Panhandle town of Panama City. The Air Force and Navy use Gulf waters off the Panhandle for weapons training.
Soloman had the missile aboard his boat for 10 days before returning Monday to port in Madeira Beach, near St. Petersburg.
A bomb squad was called in from MacDill Air Force Base and dismantled the missile in an empty parking lot.
The bomb squad said the missile was very corroded from floating in saltwater for a long time. They said it was live and in a very unstable state.

Yeah, that is exactly what i'd have done. Carry a live missle aboard my ship for 10 days. Especially when it was all rusted up.
He's lucky he didn't blow himself up.

Re: And you guys thought finding machine guns was big...
somehow i dont think that there was anyway that missile would go off on its own for no reason. if it was an Aim-9 or Aim-7, they are stable in most situations. if it was all rusted and corroded, it would still take some force to even get the explosives to go off in it.
but still, not a bright idea to bring a live old A2A missile onto your boat for 10 days just to admire it.Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

It sounded to me as though he was out fishing for 10 days after he had hooked the missle. Not that he brought it aboard and was coming and going to port. He could not have known it was a live missle. He should have assumed it was and maybe called the Coasties, but not a big deal.

Re: And you guys thought finding machine guns was big...
sure makes fishing easy..
step 1. Put missle under water
step 2. BOOM
step 3. Fish
step 4. Drink for the next 10 days straight
step 5. Go homeThe first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.
Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.
