your not seeing big brother...he's there, though.
it's all about control.
they need the list so they know where to go to confiscate all the citizen owned firearms when things like katrina happen...or the UN takes over america...or a bunch of anti-gun politicians get elected...or some incumbent party decides to declare martial law and cancel elections...or...
whatever the real reason, though, you'll be able to sleep tight at night knowing it will be "for your safety and security".Last edited by LittleRedToyota; August 28th, 2006 at 11:06 AM.

Aw crud, what about you and your buddy switching C&R weapons back and forth (we both have C&R licenses)?...or what about the 2 pistols I just got in from SOG on my C&R?...do I have to run and get those registered now too?
Yeah I'm bitching!

There is no registration, and technically if you have an FFL (and they qualify to be C&R) there is no requirement to go through a dealer. Since you have an FFL you just must log it into your book and log it out when done.

i am not saying I like the idea of sales records ect. but When I lived in NY we had real honest to goodness down to earth full blown gun registration. On the back of our pistol license it had make model caliber and serial number. When you renewed you had to bring the actual firearm (handguns) down to police so they can inspect the serial numbers to make sure you still have them.

Re: How to register an unregistered firearm.
Technically...Title 18 section 6111 states:
(c) Duty of other persons.--Any person who is not a licensed
importer, manufacturer or dealer and who desires to sell or
transfer a firearm to another unlicensed person shall do so only
upon the place of business of a licensed importer, manufacturer,
dealer or county sheriff's office, the latter of whom shall
follow the procedure set forth in this section as if he were the
seller of the firearm. The provisions of this section shall not
apply to transfers between spouses or to transfers between a
parent and child or to transfers between grandparent and
grandchild.
If your grandfather is alive, Uncle or Aunt, whoever you share your grandfather with, can give to your grandfather who can then gift it to you.
Before doing this, I would contact a lawyer. This would technically follow the letter of the law but not necessarily someone elses opinion on its spirit! (eg. The Judge that hears your case someday.)
IANAL.

Re: How to register an unregistered firearm.
Original poster owns a handgun, given to him by his girlfriend's father.
Does the original poster have to do anything? No, the law does not require him to do anything.
Should his girlfiend's father have done something? Possibly, depending on when the action took place.
What did the law say at the time of the occurrance? We don't know.
Is the girldfriend's father still alive? We don't know.
Does a statute of limitations apply? We don't know.
Bottom line? The recipient of the handgun, per state law, is under no obligation whatsoever to do anything.
