    Default Helping interested people,

particularly my wife and father-in-laws' Hematologist. We are taking him to the range for his first time this weekend. Of course he will be grilled on the 4 basic rules, but I also want to ensure I do not scare or intimidate him with a wrong move. He is primarily interested in handguns. I own a small collection and my father-in-law has one of everything (it seems like it anyway).

My plan is to start with a .22 and get some basic marksmanship/proper gun handling stuff covered. What should be my next step? Up to a 9mm or .38sp?

I'm not 100% sure of his final plan, meaning is he looking for protection at home or is he intending to carry. That said, should I take a shotgun for comparison?

I don't' want to screw this up. He's a great doctor and asked us for some help.

    Thanks,

    BG

I'd go .22 handgun then to 9mm. Bringing a shotgun and rifle or two would also be good I think. Maybe bring an evil rifle if you can

Just follow your gut instinct... You'll know (or he'll tell you) when he's ready to progress to another caliber.

If you want to carry a larger caliber firearm or shotgun, do so. Carrying it along doesn't mean it'll be shot.
Personally (opinion only), a 12 gage is too much for the first time shooting. But if he asks about it, then you can decide. I do suggest you shoot it first though. He can see your stance and judge the recoil. No use knocking him on his butt the first time out.

Good deal ! Enforce safety first and foremost and just have fun man, make it fun for all, you included. All in all, it sounds like a great idea, start small and work your way up. Be safe and just make it fun for everyone !

Stress every aspect of safe gun handling. Let him shoot whatever he's comfortable trying. Then find him a NRA Class on gun safety and home defense.
