    Default 1911 disassembly

My roommate just bought a used Springer 1911, and he is having a problem with disassembly. We get as far as taking the slide off the frame, but cannot get the guide rod and spring out. its like the guide rod is too long for the gun, and there isn't clearance with the barrel to remove it. I have no idea if it is a stock rod or not. Anyone have any ideas here? Thanks.

It depends if the gun has a bushing barrel or a non bushing barrel.

Either way.....put the slide back on. At the muzzle, press the guidrod plug in and rotate the barrel bushing. Careful the guiderod plug and spring will want to come out. Let them (gently). Pull the bushing out. Take slide off and the guiderod should come out now.

For a non-bushed barrel, leave the slide on and lock the slide back. Look for a hole in the guiderod. Bend a paperclip in an "L" so you can slide the clip along the rod and put the small end of the "L" in that hole. Slowly lower the slide on the clip. Take slide off and the guiderod and clip should come out as a unit.

Lycan, and everyone else, thanks for the help! We had quite an ordeal getting the spring and guiderod plug back on for assembly, do they make a special tool to aid in this? BTW, I think we're going to the range tomorrow...I'm excited.

Yes, it's called a bushing wrench.

Assemble put the barrel, barrel bushing and guiderod back into the slide and reinstall the slide on the frame. From the front, slip the spring over the guiderod. Put the guiderod plug on the spring and compress it until you can just turn the barrel bushing to hold it in place. Then take something flat and compress it the rest of the way until the bushing rotates the whole way in place.

    And...go here:
