Question Allegheny Co. gives retired LEOs big discount on LTCFs

This is kinda strange... and illegal (?) since the fee for the LTCF is set by statute.

From the Allegheny Co. sheriff's website, near the bottom of the page:

    FIREARMS FEES

ALL FIREARMS FEES MUST BE PAID IN CASH ONLY.

    NEW AND RENEWALS : $25.00

RETIRED LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS : $2.50

unless the county is kicking in the additional funds as a thank you for their service?

Although, as a retired LEO, they would be covered under LEOSA and wouldn't need a LTCF...unless they don't want to go thru the LEOSA required annual firearms training and qualification standards.

That is just a heap of bullshit, right there. Who does Allegheny think they are? The fee is set in statute, shouldn't be any more, or any less, for anyone. Call me a cop basher all you like, but there is no special category of people who should be getting their LTCF's at a discount price.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the various counties have different fees, and if so, how can they if it's "set by statute"?

I swear I've seen posts by people stating what it cost to get their LTCF and thinking to myself "Wow, it's only $25 here".

Oh, and I think it's BS(reduced fee for LEO) as well, because that just furthers the "only police should have guns" mentality.

This could happen if you serve as a leo for two years, then end up getting another job/changing career paths.

Or if you are a sheriff/deputy sheriff.... where you're not blessed by LEOSA.

The statute reads that it is a punishable offense to charge more than the set fee. I do not see that it is an offense to charge less. The old "laws bar things, not allow things" sort of view.

However, they do not even get the full amount for this requirement:
(ii) An additional temporary fee of $5 shall be remitted by the sheriff to the Firearms License to Carry Modernization Account, which is hereby established as a special restricted receipt account within the General Fund of the State Treasury.

Be safe (and remember, some are more equal than others).

Umm no it couldn't happen (if you are talking about using LEOSA and quitting after 2 years), need 15 years active service to qualify. But the more I read it, the more it sounds like you are talking about the 2.50 fee, which you really wouldn't be eligible for either. i am sure you would need to prove that you retired and not quit. Dont kknow many departments that let you retire after 2 years.

Isn't the reason that sheriffs/deputy sheriffs are not covered under LEOSA is that they are not considered LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS?

So, then they wouldn't qualify either for Allegheny County's "LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS" discount...unless the sheriff DOES consider them LEOs. And since he made up this rule he probably would!
