Default Looking for a woods Gun, 10mm? .41 mag?

Hi everyone , i have decided that my G32 in .357 isnt enough for a woods gun , i'm deciding between a G20 10mm and a Smith Model 57 in $1 mag, now would you say that the 10mm and 41 mag is equal in power? thanks,

    Nyman

In PA it would make an OK woods gun for non hunting. Buffalobore makes a nice hot solid bullet loading in .357 sig in addition to a hot golddot HP load. Doubletap makes a 147gr HP load in .357sig.

now would you say that the 10mm and 41 mag is equal in power? thanks,
No. I would say the .41 mag has the advantage in energy. A Glock 20 would function as a woods gun (non hunting). I would use 180gr or heavier bullets for woods protection. Once again Buffalobore & Doubletap have some nice loadings in 10mm. A 10mm is expensive to shoot however. And when using real, not watered down 10mm ammo.....you may want to upgrade the recoil spring in the G20. Both my G20 & G32 have aftermarket recoil springs & guide rods.

Ammo in .357sig....357mag ..& .44mag is easier to find than 10mm or .41mag.

Don't believe all the hype about the terrible 10mm recoil. It's all BS from people who have never fired a 10. My G20 is a sweetheart to shoot.....just expensive to feed.

A .357mag revolver is all the woods gun one really needs in PA. Ammo is cheaper & easier to find than 10mm or .41mag. And..you can load it with .38s for less recoil & cheaper shooting. If you don't already have one...finding a used .357mag revolver won't be hard.

if you're looking for a woods gun why bother with a 41 magnum when you can buy a 44 magnum? there are lot more choices in 44 magnum and ammo is probably easier to find and more plentiful. 10mm is a good round but you've got to make sure you're buying full power 10mm loads since most 10mm is loaded down and equivilent to 40 cal.

I say .41 mag because i'm concerned about the tremendous recoil of the .44 out of a revolver.

Yes i do own .357 mag and 357Sig , maybe i should explore hotter rounds for the .357 and a heavier mainspring.

I really do like the Glock 32 its the only Glock that feels good in my hand.

So you guys are saying that a .357 sig and .357 mag is good enough for a Black Bear if the needs arise to defend myself?

I recently found out that the woods behind my house is loaded with some Huge Black bears, usually when i'm back there i have my .40 FNP with me , little did i know. Sometimes my son is back there on his ATV and he is not armed.

So i should skip the G20 and .41 mag?

Oh my .357 Mag is a Smith 66 with 4 inch barrel.

    Thanks , Nyman

That's just fine. Now go and get some good full pwer kick a$$ ammo for her and you have nothing to worry about but your ability to hit what you're aiming at.

Model 66 ss and 19 blue should use light 357 mag loads. The frame and design is not ment for full powered loads. You can shoot a few but you will batter the gun.

smith told me that directly. ask me how I know!!!

personally i wouldn't trust anything less than a 44 magnum if i was concerned with black bears. i don't think 357 sig is a large enough round to cause any serious damage to a bear before it can kill you. recoil out of a ruger super redhawk or similar wheel gun chambered in 44 magnum is more than managable. if you've never fired a 44 i'd suggest you rent one and fire a few rounds and get accustomed to it and then invest a few hundred bucks on something used by SW, Ruger or taurus. the taurus has a ported barrel which helps to reduce felt recoil.

I'm big fan of the 10mm,so I'm biased. The 10mm can be had in up to 200gr loads from Double Tap.These are no nonsense powerful loads. The recoil I think is alot less snappy then the 40cal and alot more pwerful.I carry the Glock 29,I have a glock 20 I carry in the woods.16rds of full power gives you alot of convidence. That being said the 357mag just fine for a woods gun.

^^^^^ Thats what I feel! couldn't have said it better. When your talking
.44 Magnum its no cheap shit either, in fact I bet its more expensive than
10mm. By the way, I try to keep it light as possible when hiking, hunting, fishing, etc. So the G20 or even G29 would be ideal well it is ideal for me. My future purchase will be a G20 and a G29. I love .357 mag too so whatever you choose you will be good, the 10mm is pretty much known as the automatic .357 but can be more powerful.
Reputation is what I strive for.

If a 44 mag weighs near 48 ounces empty with at least a 6" barrel, I wouldn't be concerned with the recoil. .357 and black bears, unless I carried near max load or the right factory load, I'd forget about the .357. Get used to the recoil or get a comfortable sling and carry a rifle.
