Personally, I'd leave it as is. For me, I look at finish wear as "character". If I were to refinish my M&P's, I'd go with someone like Bowie Tactical Concepts or Burwell Gunsmithing. You could also have someone bead blast it, since it's stainless steel underneath the finish.

If you have access to bead blasting equipment, I would think you could do it yourself. I don't trust myself enough to do something like that.

There are solvents that should do a pretty good job, but if you plan on blueing it or something ... I would hit the slide with a polishing wheel. You want it to be as smooth as possible.

I love the polish look. I did it ont my Glocks and love it.The blueing is fairly easy to remove. Take the parts you want to polish and wash them off with a good degreaser like a good dish soap.Make sure to remove all grease and oil.
Soak the piece in white distilled vinegar for two to three hours.
Make a mix of bakeing soda and water slurry and soak the pieces about 5 min. then rinse off all the slurry and dry. With 0000 super fine steel-wool
and Mothers mag and aluminum polish and lots of elbow grease. After it starts to shine, replace steel-wool with soft cotton,(an old T-shirt) Absolutely beautiful.!!
Now I just did it on the barrels but it can be done on the slides also.
Do not use sand-paper. Be patient and take your time, beautiful !!
