I was a city officer , this happened out in the county and while I knew the deputies it was dark and I knew their characteristics on shootings . You might say it was self preservation . In Texas the sheriffs office handles calls outside city limits instead of the state police .

BTW, maybe some of our resident LEOs here could answer this scenario... say you, as an off-duty LEO, in a jurisdiction where you are not known, are holding a suspect at gunpoint.

You have not called 911 because your phone is dead. But apparently someone else has because you hear sirens and see cop cars coming.

Do you pull out your badge and ID before the responders get on the scene and hold it up to identify yourself right away?

Do you verbally identify yourself first?

Is there a "secret code word" between LEOs that you shout out to your fellow LEOs so they know you are a good guy?

    Just wondering.

If all else fails, I would hold my anti-crime tool on the BG, and as the LEO's pull, up raise my off hand while lowering the tool to the ground and coming up pointing at said bad guy. that would lower the threat level mentally and already begin formulating a plan of action for the LEO... as they are more-than-likely going instantly realize the "more than likely good guy" from the "more than likely bad guy"... giving you precious moments to clarify the situation.

If you're gonna carry a silly badge, might as well make it really silly.

I thought that a badge represented a symbol of legal authority on behalf of someone else. Thus, police carry badges. Security guards carry badges even if they don't have a gun because they have legal authority to act one some body else's behalf.

When you carry a gun, you do not exercise legal authority on behalf of anyone else.

A badge is just a shiney piece of metal. PSP troopers don't even wear badges.

My thought is that one of those badges might prevent people from getting excited when they see your gun. At least if you look like you might be a cop. I'm tall, have short hair and am often mistaken for a cop. So if I have a gun and someone sees a badge clipped to my belt, they'll assume that I can carry it. Of course, the downside is that people may assume that I'm a cop and expect me to do something when I'm just an observer like they are. Then again, I probably don't need a badge for people to think that I'm a cop so I'll just save my money.

The other situation, one in which Po-lease are responding, waving a shiney piece of metal may keep you from getting shot by the responding occifers.
