From what I understand, it has to be shipped ground due to knew regulations regarding explosive material.

ammunition has never been mailable via USPS, since its considered hazardous, like sprays and chemicals.

you have to use a ground based commercial carrier, UPS is fine, and the box must clearly be marked with a ORM-D on the outside.

    thats it.

WMG, I take mine to the UPS Hub out 764 past 58th street. They got really goofy hours but no hassels whatsoever.

Shipping ammunition is not cheap. I used to ship hazardous materials all the time in my previous life, but its really one of those things that if you don't do it all the time you tend to forget. I really recommend going to a UPS or FedEx facility (not a UPS Store or a FedEx/Kinkos - they can't take HazMat for shipping) and work with one of the DG (Dangerous Goods) specialists they have there. Everything will have to be done by the book since shipping ammunition falls under 49 CFR and the carriers tend to be even more strict than the Feds. Try UPS first though, iirc FedEx required us to have an account with them that they had to approve in order to ship DG with them...dunno if UPS does the same thing, but....

Yeah, its kinda rambling, but I don't have my reference materials in front of me, so its all from memory.

Thanks , as for the haz mat fees , last I recall that only applied to primers and gun powder.
Once you put them together and made a live rd out of it , the haz mat fees did not apply , unless they have changed lately.

Loaded ammunition is not classified as hazardous material. For UPS or FedEx Ground, a 10lb box of ammo ships the same as a 10lb box of feathers. Just make sure it's marked "ORM-D Cartridges, Small Arms"

The post office will not ship ammunition at any price.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you. They may not charge you extra like they do for some other hazmat shipments, but ammunition is very much hazmat. The very fact that you have to label it ORM-D (Other Regulated Materials - Domestic) tells you that its hazmat. ORM-D packages don't require shippers papers(49CFR173.155(c)), so thats why you don't get charged the extra money for hazmat rate (all those hazmat shipping classes are starting to come back to me). From 49CFR171.8 Definitions "Consumer commodity means a material that is packaged and distributed in a form intended or suitable for sale through retail sales agencies or instrumentalities for consumption by individuals for purposes of personal care or household use." Being labelled ORM-D does not preclude its classification as a hazardous material.

But yeah, when you ship an ORM-D labelled package it ships the same as anything else of the same weight. I was mistaken on that part, but like I said, I shipped hazmat (usually class 3 flammable liquids), and only really dealt with ORM-D stuff in the classes.

ok, so by the book definition it's hazmat, but for the purposes of shipping and the context of this thread, it's not considered hazmat.
