.308 is very good for self defense, out to about 500 yards.

This isn't exactly a damning case for .380. It did do a through and through on her, and they didn't specify what type of bullet it was. I can only assume it was hardball, as a HP passing through skull without expanding would be rare.

Then again, she got shot in the brainpan and lived, so rare might be out the window.

I would really like to see the ballistics tests on that bullet. It must have had no wake. As for the lady, her survival is not nearly as shocking as her composure after being shot in the head and losing her husband to suicide. "Would you like some tea?"

.380 is just fin for Self Defense. The woman lived because of a freak coincidence. The bullet managed to cleanly pierce her skull and traveled perfectly through one of the fissures in the brain.

It's called shock. The brain was not only physically traumatized, but she was also very much emotionally traumatized. Some people cope with this by becoming ultra rational, as she was. Another possibility is that the bullet passed close to her Amygdala which is part of the brain that regulates emotions as well as processing events for long-term memory storage.

But of course, this is all speculation

There are cases of people recovering fine after being hit with 30'06 rounds in the head. So its not the ammo. I am surprised that it went thru and out of the skull. Lucky lady.
