The "RIM" of a cartridge is the rear of the cartridge (where the primer goes).

The "Case Mouth" of a cartridge is the front of the cartridge (where the bullet goes).

The "head" of a case is that distance from the back of the rim to the inside bottom of the case. This is where you get the "case head separation" that can happen after a round is reloaded numerous times. A reloader watches the cases for the signs of this problem.

"Rimmed cases": 38 Spl, 357 Mag, 44 Spl, 44 Mag, 30-30 Win, 32 Win Spl. The headspace is controlled by the rim.

"Rimless cases"(rifle): 30-06, 22-250, 223. The headspace is controlled by the shoulder to head length.

"Rimless cases" (handgun): 45 acp, 40 S&W, 380 auto. The headspace is controlled by the front edge of the case mouth (where it contacts the front of the chamber).

"Rebated rimless cases": 284 Win. The headspace is controlled by the shoulder to head length.

"Semi-rimmed cases": 225 Win, 220 Swift. The headspace is controlled by the shoulder to head length.

"Belted cases": 300 H&H Mag, 7mm Rem Mag. The headspace is controlled by the belt and its mating recess in the chamber.

Hope this helps clear up the terminologies. Any good reloading manual will explain all of this in detail.

If, by that, you mean that the 7.62 x 39 can be fired in a 7.62 NATO chamber, you are mistaken. Both cartridges headspace off the shoulder, and as the old USSR round and modern terrorist darling is 12mm shorter than the NATO, it's a really, really bad idea.

Remington made a 25 and a 32 in addition to the 30 and 35. They were chambered in the model 14/141 pumps also. Sweet handling guns, my buddy got his father in laws recently.

If you reload, you can use data for the 30-30 you just need to use the proper case. Last I looked, Midway had both dies and cases .

    Hello,
I know a lot of time has elapsed, but I would trade ammo you want for the 30 Remington if you still had it. Thanks, Tony

Do you still have those 30 Remington Cartridges? I now own my Grandfather's (made in Nov 1923) and would love to be able to shoot it.

    Thanks
