applying for PA carry license (LTCF)
Hi all,
I am filling out my carry license application as I type this. I have a question. Box number 28 asks: "Reason for a licence to carry firearms:". There are 6 check boxes:
- self-defense
- employment
- hunting and fishing
- target shooting
- gun collecting
- other (fill in the blank)
A friend of mine (who lives in NH) told me I should only check the "other" box and write "for all lawful uses".
Is this what others have done also? I'd like to hear suggestions on how to fill this section out. Thanks.

Just put self defense... I assume that is the real reason...

FYI...
I just turned in my application. The sheriff's deputy I spoke with said to simply check the "self-defense" box, and that would cover everything. So I did... but I also kept the "for all lawful uses" box checked also. He said that's ok.

Self defense worked for me. Good luck.

Self defense worked for me in Philly, so it'll have to work anywhere.

this is a shall issue state so it really doesn't matter. Anyhoo, i checked self defense also.
In York, it take a couple of weeks to get the license. they don't call your references though.

On my application there were only 2 boxes (this was 3 years ago, it may have changed since then) Hunting or Protection. I checked Protection. Mailed it in and had it back in within the week. Now, we just go to the county sheriff, and walk out with it in about 20 minutes (Cambria County).
Guns are like shoes...a woman should have one in every caliber.
I'm armed and menopausal...Excuse me, did you have something to say?

In the past, you had to be careful what you checked. Now, though, PA is shall-issue and you can just check self-defense.

It does not matter what box you check, a LTC is good for ALL reasons. Anyone that tells you different doesn't know their %#$ from a hole in the ground.
PACS §6109. Licenses.
(a) Purpose of license.—A license to carry a firearm shall be for the purpose of carrying a firearm concealed on or about one’s person or in a vehicle throughout this Commonwealth.
That is the purpose behind the license, no matter what reason you select.

Steve in PA
I have a question for you. I just put in my renewal for my LTCF. Mine expires in 2 weeks. The deputy took all my info and said it could take up to 45 days. He said it would probably be 3 weeks. I told him I understand but I also have a Florida CCW(he knew anyway cause I gave him a photo copy as per application). So I figured because of reciprocity if I run out of time on my current PA LTCF I will carry under my Florida. he told me I should not do this because many sheriffs dont know the law and they dont know about reciprocity and if I get into a shoot he does not know how the DA would react that I dont have a valid PA LTCF. Just the Florida. So to play it safe dont carry till my PA renewal is in. To me this sounds funny.
What gets me is I was there 3 days ago to pick up the application and a non sheriff(clerk) told me I dont need a LTCF because I have the Florida CCW.
My question to you is: does PA let a PA resident carry on a non resident CCW if reciprocity is there. or do they frown upon this because you are bypassing the PA LTCF. Is the reciprocity agreement only for out of state CCW's. Thanks i hope this is clear. I appreciate your time.
