Which recoil pad for a Winchester Model 70?
I bought a used Winchester Model 70 (from 1973) a while back and finally got around to shooting it for the first time today. It is chambered for 30.06 which is a lot of kick. After attempting to sight it in today, my arm is completely bruised. Which recoil pad will fit the gun and feel the softest?
Any opinions or experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Zach

Hart muzzle break!!!!!!!!
My .338 WM has less recoil than my '06 model 70.

I guess I should mention that I'd like to keep the front sight on the gun as I plan on using the iron sights as well.

I'd also have a Win 70 Featherweight in 30-06, and it's on my to-do list. Would like to learn about any improvements or mods tried by others. Rifle does indeed have a bit of a kick to it.

Put a Limb Saver pad on it. No fitting; reduces the felt recoil; no modifications needed.

I was just fixing to say, I'd probably recommend a limb saver recoil pad. If you want one that is fitted to the stock, they do make those as well. Either way, they're good recoil pads.

Re: Which recoil pad for a Winchester Model 70?
It is an easy fix. Dump the wood stock and buy a HOUGUE and it will take out the harsh kick.
I just installed one and shot 3 boxes of 165/180 at 50/100/200 yards and it was dead on.
It is a bit heavier but a good sling will take out the shoulder tug in the field.

Dump the wood stock? I wouldn't have bought it if it didn't come with wood. I'm old fashioned I guess.
