    Question AK platform modifications

Hey everyone, I have been looking to see if there is and alternative to the recoil spring, specifically a piston operating system I am sure someone out there has replaced the spring with some type of piston system I just havent found one yet.

Not sure what you're asking here. The AK is a piston driven system.

I think the OP is looking to replace the recoil spring with a hydraulic piston type replacement. I'm guessing kinda like you can do for the AR15 buffer. There is nothing like that that I'm aware of.

    Why would you do that?

Yes I meant the recoil spring, I aware that it is a gas piston system. If the spring was replaced with a piston type like replacing the buffer spring on and AR platform I think you would have lower recoil and possibly better second shot accuracy. I've done a lot to one of my AK's including having a very expensive heavy "match grade" replacement barrel made by a machinist friend that has made it dramatically more accurate I also put a 2 stage trigger in it. I am hoping, even if you think its a waste of time, some of you might have some helpful suggestions. I am retired and this is my hobby.

Thumbs up Re: AK platform modifications

Who cares if it is a waste of time. Its your AK and your hobby, enjoy. The reason I asked is because the AK is such a simple and therefore reliable weapon. I think however you are up against the delema the creater of the AK had and thus moved to the 74 variant. Recoil is greater with the intermediate cartridge than the lesser sizes (either NATO 556 or the Warsaw 545x39). In any regard, please keep us up to date with your work. I love AKs and would be really interested in reading about your work.

You might want to check out the AK 107

It sounds like it has something similar to what your looking for:

"This system uses a recoil-dampening countermass mechanism with two operating rods that move in opposite directions, thereby providing "balance". One operating rod, the upper, has a gas piston facing forward while the bolt carrier also has a gas piston. The gas tube at the forward end of the handguard is double-ended to accommodate the two rods"

Good luck finding parts for it though.... It seems like you would have to reverse engineer one and find someone to produce them.

It makes me wonder if it has an adjustment like a FAL to regulate gas pressure.

I know they have them on the russian tokarevs. Not sure if you would need them on an AK. I think most AKs just send all the gas right back to the piston. Sometimes the gastubes have vent holes, sometimes they dont.

Given the track record of the AK, I'd be inclined to just stick a recoil pad on it and call it a day. If it ain't broke...
