Talking Form 4 and Suppressor questions

I have two questions which I couldn't find answers to on the boards (short of spending the next 3 days going through old posts). Anyhow they are...

#1 - Do I need to engrave my suppressor, or any item for that matter, for a FORM 4?

#2 - Do I need prior approval by the ATF for travel out of state for suppressors?

Thanks. You guys are learnin me proper!!

Thanks Guns4Fun. I didn't think I did since I am not manufacturing and it's just a transfer but I had my doubts. Anyone have any info on traveling with suppressors?

    You're welcome

Yeah, i'm not sure about the suppressor. I know you need the 5320.20 to transport guns but i'm not too sure about suppressors. I want to say no you do not---but i'll leave that for someone who knows for sure.

    EDIT
Found a source of info for you---didn't think you needed one but they say--it isn't a bad idea incase you encounter an LEO in your travels. I believe / trust the source of the info--

How about traveling with a suppressor across states lines?

Approved 5320.20s are required for interstate transportation of all NFA items except suppressors and AOWs.

If you are transporting other types of NFA, it's worth getting .20s for your suppressors and AOWs as well as a CYA. Many LE do not know AOWs and cans are exempt from .20s, and will wonder why they aren't on your approved list.

BATFE will approve a 5320.20 for suppressors and AOWs if you submit one.

As far as notifying out-of-state authorities ... no notice is required to travel through a state -- that is protected under FOPA '86. Some states do have their own requirements for visitors, though, so if you want to shoot NFA at your destination, check in the hometown forums about that state's regs. (IIRC, Va., N.C. and Mass. regulate visitors' NFA, but don't hold me to that.)

I found this from an earlier thread in this discussion board...

    http://forum.pafoa.org/nfa-class-3-t...te-travel.html

I think it helps. Looks like if it's legal to have it where it's going you should be ok.

I updated my other post---that agrees with the link you posted. So it sounds like you're good to go without the 5322.20---but they say it doesn't hurt to get one anyway. The 5320.20 is good for one year once approved.

No to both. Silencers and AOWs are exempt from that stupid interstate travel form. When buying on a Form-4, the manufacturer has already marked their cans. If you were building your own can on a Form-1, then you would have to do the same thing with your can.
