Torn between two cartridges
I am going to purchase a CZ 550 FS but can't decide if I should get it in .270 or 6.5x55. I know the price in the ammo is significantly reduced in the 6.5x55 but does the caliber compare to the .270. I will be using it for deer. Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Torn between two cartridges
Either one will kill deer nicely. That said, in factory ammo, the 270 is faster, more available and the same price or cheaper. I used Cabelas website for reference, I tried 4 brands before I found any 6.5 ammo (Hornady for $27.99), the 270 showed up in all 4 brands for as little as $17.99. 6.5 stuff may be hard to find in the backwoods, everybody will have 270.
The 6.5 does have a 'cool' factor to it.
BTW, I assume you're talking 270 Win. not the short mag or Weatherby.

My vote is for the 6.5x55 Swede, as it is an excellent cartridge. I've been a fan of this cartridge for a long time, due to its excellent capabilities. In Sweden, they love this cartridge, and use it for everything up to, and including, moose. Add to that, it shoots extremely flat, and packs a punch at longer disances.

Re: Torn between two cartridges
There are many things to consider when choosing a caliber. Many have been offered already (resale, availability, 'cool'). I think you need to ask yourself how serious you want to be with your rifle. Either caliber is going to do the job of downing a deer with relatively proper placement. If you are going to consider reloading and want to achieve the best accuracy you can then I would recommend the 6.5x55. The ballistics are better than that of the .270. If you are going to use off-the-shelf ammo and only want an effective hunting rifle (not that this is a bad thing) then the .270 is going to be the better of the two.
I think the founding fathers meant exactly what they wrote: the government should not make any laws restricting the RIGHT of the people to 'hold or retain in one's possession' and 'hold or carry' guns and other weapons that would allow them to keep their government in line.
