Default 1911 with a rail without paying a fortune?

I already have a TLR-2 light/laser, and would like to get a 1911, and use it for home defence, as well as a range toy, and get a 22 conversion for it.

The only 1911 I've found with a rail is the Taurus PT-1911, at least without spending over $1k on the thing. Are there any "base model" full-sized 1911's with tactical rails on them that don't cost an arm and a leg, besides the taurus?

If the Taurus is the only one in that price range, has anyone run a 22 conversion on them? results? thoughts? recommendations?

    Thanks,

    -MTechnik

I think the PT1911 is going to be the least expensive railed 1911 you'll find. I just purchased a Springfield LW operator, and it was the 2nd least expensive I found. It comes in just around the 1k mark, depending on where you get it.

    http://forum.pafoa.org/gun-pictures-...-operator.html

I went with the Springfield because:

    - I've always wanted a Springer
    - I don't like that Taurus integrates their locking safety into the hammer
    - It's lighter than the Taurus because of the alloy frame

I love my Springer, but I don't think you'll go wrong with the Taurus; if you search the forum you'll see the comments are mostly positive.

Never tried running a .22 conversion, so I can't help there.

    Good luck!

1911's with Rails would make JMB spin in his grave.

LDA triggers are sacrilege as well and all guns sporting an LDA trigger should be burned at the stake.

You know what they say about opinions, though

You can't beat a SA TRP - even if it has the offensive rail on it. Of course, you're looking at $1500. However, if you ever have any problem with it, SA's customer service is tops in the industry. Taurus customer service is allegedly awful - and I've seen a number of PTs go back turn arounds sometimes 6 - 9 months if not longer.

Check out the 1911forum for more info.

Dawson Precision makes a bolt on rail that can be attached to any standard 1911. http://www.dawsonprecision.com/Produ...000-1094593471

Colt has a XSE rail gun for 2009 but it will prolly bring $800 - $900.

It's hard to find a gun in that price range with a rail...most 1911 gunners sh*t their pants when they think of John Brownings masterpiece with a light hanging off the dust cover.

If I was in your shoes, I would buy the Taurus. Then strip out all of the Taurus guts and fill it with parts made by Ed Brown or Wilson Combat. When finished, you would have a $700 Taurus shell with lots of love inside.

Or you could just hold the gun in the right hand, and the light in the left.

    +1 to that.

S&W does some railed models...but that depends if you're cool with a Swartz safety and an external extractor. For being on a budget, they certainly deliver. They are NOT a SA TRP, though.

Street price should be below $1k.

That's like putting chrome rims on a Ford Taurus.
