Removing paint from stock and barrel.
Greetings. I have aquired a shot gun that is completely covered in paint. Black, green, brown, tan, olive, you name it this gun seems to have it on it.
I would like to remove all of the paint if possible. I carefully tried to chipped a small section away to see how many coats was on it. It lookes like a pile.
Im not sure, but what i ovserved it appears, when you got to the metal, that it had a matte black finsh. Its a mossberg 835.
Any one know of any tricks of the trade, or solvents i could use to get it back to the bare gun without ruining the metal?they're selling make believe and we don't buy that here

Try gasoline. I have had luck with this in the past, but i never tried it on a wooden stock. Make sure to do it in a well ventilated area and clean it well before firing. Dont do it in the house the wife will kill you.

citrus cleaner from homedepot undiluted will clean the paint from the wood stack if you keep it wet for a day or two.
Havent tried it on the "parked" finish though.

I had a WASR10 that someone painted black. I used carb cleaner. sprayed it on and wiped the paint right off. It looked a lot nicer naked.

Re: Removing paint from stock and barrel.
Either use paint stripper, Captian Lees works excellent but wear gloves or take it some where to a machine shop(like mine) to have it sandblasted back to new... that would be your best bet
and if you use captain lees paint stripper make sure it doesnt come in contact with anything other than metal... ie...plastic trigger guard... it eats plastic away quickly so make sure you are careful

Re: Removing paint from stock and barrel.
I used a heat gun and a plastic putty knife for the bulk of the paint. Then hit the rest of the wood stock with sand paper. Be careful not to burn the wood. The shotgun I did didnt have any plastic either so that might be problematic.

Re: Removing paint from stock and barrel.
I use paint thinner on my mosin. Wear gloves and change them often. If the paint thinner gets on the glove you have about 1-2 minutes before they start to bubble up and burn your skin. The paint thinner works really well and very quickly!

Naval Jelly.
I bought some "rust removal gel" at Napa. It is pink jelly and it stripped the blueing (and rust) off of my barrel, receiver, and every other metal part of the gun when I recoated mine.
Wear gloves though, it'll burn ya.Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President
