Range Report: AR and Tommy Gun 1st for both
Well since today was a sick day I decided to make some use of it down at PMSC. I've had both the Colt AR and Thompson 1927A-1 for a few months now and this was my first time to shoot both!!
Starting first with the tommy gun:
I've heard mostly bad reports but I trugged ahead.
I paid dealer gouging prices but I trugged ahead.
Load up that first magazine excited as could be!!!
Boom.. Boom... Boom... CLICK...AWWW S#!% WTF!!!!!!
Oh yes, Oh yes, lets try again
Boom, Boom, Boom, CLICK.....
After 10 more minutes with this peice of junk I dropped my head defeated and locked it up in the truck.
Next was the new (to me) Colt AR
Loaded up the new P-mags and has nothing but smiles the rest of the shoot.
It took a good while to sight in but thankfully a very helpful guy was there shooting off his Mark III and helped me a great deal. After alot, lol I mean alot of ammo it was finally working in our favor and everything was great! He also let me try out his Ruger and Taurus Judge which I greatly enjoyed.
I let him know about our site and our group shoots so hopefully he gets a chance to add to this great group of people.
In summary:
AR-15 colt is working as expected and loving it!
Thompson 1928 Is working as expected and dreading how to fix it.Last edited by Huntingdonhavoc; March 29th, 2009 at 06:16 PM.

What's the matter with the Thompson? I thought they were pretty reliable.
Sounds like a fun trip to the range. I hope you didn't waste a sick day being sick!Kevin Singleton, Potawatomi - {ZRT - Sector 4}

Re: Range Report: AR and Tommy Gun 1st for both
The thompson seemed to want to push the underneath round forward while the top one was being chambered forward if that makes sense. Which in doing so when it was time for the next round it wouldnt chanber the catch would miss it and it would close w/o a round.
With semi-auto thompsons you have to modify all magazines to make them work with your rifle. The magazine holes have to be slightly enlarged. Just enough to make it lock up without play. All seemed perfect but it still wouldn't chamber.
So i'm stumped, and no I only have one stick mag so I don't know if thats the issue. I didn't try to run the drum as I left the 3rd hand at home.
Ammo:
Blazer Brass 230 Grain ball
the brass had scorched (burnt)marks 180 deg. on the one side)
Primer hits looked great. No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full

I get very sad every time I hear a bad report about a Tommy Gun. I want one so bad, and hearing all the problems is killing me. I know that you can make the function fine, and I will own one some day. But I still don't like hearing bad range reports.

I was in the same boat as you mojo. Appearently there are a few very good smith's that do exclusive work on Thompson's and one that does the drums and they will run like magic. I just have other things $$ wise that I figure will be better spent so I won't have that option for a while. I cannot figure out any easy fix.

Visit the TSMG board and post your issues, that's where the TSMG-smiths hang out.
Nothing that can't be fixed on these guns. And once they run... your ammo budget has been blown to pieces.

Thompson mags are still the same prices they've always been.
just get a dremel and test fit
I had one years ago wish I kept.Took some tinkering with mags/Feed lips then it ran like a top

do not modify the mags to fit the gun
modify the gun to fit the mags.
remove that 1/8" from the mag catch instead of the magazine.
there's a bunch of things that a dremel can smooth out in it.
and FYI
if you have a semi auto gun, you have either a model 1927 or 1927a1.....i'm betting it's a 1927a1...the '27's are still nfa guns.it's only metal, we can out think it....
