I got in touch with turbothis, Matt Yeamans - http://mygunsnorthwest.com/contact.html , and will definitely go the rewelding route. He charges $350 for a Russian type 3 and $400 for a Russian type 2, $25 shipping to my FFL. If the lighting cuts are short add $50 to grind them to full length.

He was very quick in replying and what I've seen of his work on theakforum.net is impressive to say the least. Thanks for the lead mojo!

I like the almost-black furniture on an AK. I might have to get an Ironwood stock set, and hit it with some dark stain.

Glad that it's going to work out ... Matt has a great reputation and does great work. Wasn't a doubt in my mind that he couldn't help.
