Police shot a man during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia last night after he allegedly reached for a revolver tucked in the waistband of his pants.
Steven Leary, 28, of the 200 block of West Zeralda Street in the city's Germantown section, remained in critical but stable condition today at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania with a gunshot wound to his right side, police said.
Lt. Frank Vanore said police pulled over a 2009 Ford Taurus with two occupants shortly after 10 p.m. at 61st and Chestnut Streets for making an illegal turn. As police ran a check on the car and its driver, Leary - the passenger - asked if he could get out and stretch. When police allowed him to do so, he reached for a six-shot revolver in his pants, Vanore said.
An officer fired once, striking Leary, Vanore said. The officer's identity was not released.
At the time of the shooting, Leary was wanted for escape, believed to be for failing to appear at a court hearing, Vanore said.
In addition to the revolver, Leary was found with a plastic bag containing suspected marijuana and unidentified pills, Vanore said. He was charged with aggravated assault, weapons and narcotics offenses.

see, some police do realize that it doesnt take 76 bullets to hit someone to get the job done.
good job on a tough quick decision.Guns don't kill people, it's mostly the bullets.

Re: Police shoot man in West Philly traffic stop
poor shoot....
the dumb shit is still alive and we'll have to pay for him for the next 10 - 15 yearsThe first vehicles normally on the scene of a crime are ambulances and police cruisers. If you are armed you have a chance to decide who gets transported in which vehicle, if you are not armed then that decision is made for you.
Be prepared, because someone else already is and no one knows their intent except them.

He was let out of the car to stretch? More like either dump drugs, run, or shoot LEO.
I thought SOP was to keep them in the car, confined and in sight?
Tough decision to shoot... but again, why was he out of the car?

too bad the crumb is still alive.
I'm sure he'll end up suing the city and win millions of $$$ because his mommy didn't love him and he didn't have any positive male role models when he was growing up.
Bye for a while, guard the fort. - My Dad
