Default WPVI, tell me it ain't so: I thought we didn't REGISTER firearms in PA?

Some mid-50s guy goes nuts when his 20-something girlfriend breaks up with him in the 7500 block of Lansdowne Ave. Poor woman goes down in a hail of bullets but manages to tell police who the assailant was before she expires.

Fast-forward to the second scene, on Salford St., in West Philly, right around 60th and Market. The news assures us that the man, who then went on to poorly attempt suicide, was barricaded inside his residence with multiple firearms, including a rifle or rifles, a fact known to the police because they were registered to him.

I feel sorry as hell at the loss of life and torment introduced into the lives of families and friends here, but I have to ask, why is it that the PPD knows for a fact that this guy has a rifle or rifles in his house?

Police knew Wilson had five firearms in the house, including several rifles which were registered to him. Authorities also could see a suspicious device during the standoff.
PS: Since when does a rifle make the legal definition cut as a firearm anyway?
