It's part of the design from the AR family of rifles and is nessecary, the bufferspring housing contains the bufferspring that lessens the recoil of the bolt, the bolt carrier group is propelled backwards during the gas operated cycling, the bolt actaully goes partially into the tube during ejection/feeding. Normally you can't see the tube because it's inside the stock.
