Yes, it's real, and has been around for 20+ years. I remember that stuff from when I was a kid.

They're a gimmick. Dragons Breath shotgun shells are filled with Zirconium alloy powder pressed into pellets or flakes. They are a pyrotechnic shotgun round that emits sparks and at times flames. It can be used as a flare in distress situations. It does not turn your shotgun into a flamethrower as the company would like you to believe. The rounds do not feed in semi autos and in my experience even had to be loaded directly into the breech of a pump action.

The claim of "setting everything in its path ablaze" is a bit of a stretch. The material in the shells produces a lot of sparks but they burn out quickly. I was given a few of these a couple years ago and we couldn't get dry hay, leaves, or grass to ignite.

Suggesting that you attempted each of these potential safety violations...

Suggesting that you were there to make a judgment on the safety, or lack of.......

Uh yeah, we did. Open plowed field, moist ground, no other combustibles with 300 yards, and a pair of extinguishers on hand... You must have an obsolete version of the World Book Encyclopedia of Safety Concerns.

IF these things performed as advertised ANY discharge of them would be unsafe. My point is simply that they are an overpriced gimmick and that is just one of the many reasons I would not suggest relying on them for anything other than a fireworks display.

    .
Ohh stop it with the PC BS. Fire extinguishers, moisture, fire department on speed dial, forest service helicopter on alert, blau, blau, blau.
Tell the truth, you were a kid and you just did it to see what would happen. No one was hurt, no one's house burned down. It's OK.

Brother, I was a Combat Engineer. If I possessed a shotgun I'm *sure* I'd have given these a try at least once, propriety be damned...

I bought a pack of these when they were first advertised in the 90s in Shotgun News. I was not impressed. Two shells were OK but not impressive, the third was a dud. Maybe the quality control got better since then, but if your going to buy I would suggest buy only a couple at first to try them.
Another thing is that their advertising was so effective that several states ban them. Florida is one of them. It is a felony to possess them there. (Paragraph 2B in link)
