DA targets drug activity at Downtown McDonald's

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala today threatened to start nuisance procedures against three Downtown McDonald's restaurants unless the company stops drug activity in and around the locations.

The announcement followed the arrest today of the manager of the McDonald's at Fifth Avenue and Smithfield Street.

John J. Eckard, 48, of Bethel Park, was accused of selling prescription pills to a police informant last month. The informant had purchased pills from Mr. Eckard in the past, police said.

Mr. Zappala's release said the arrest was part of a drive by his office and Port Authority and city police to "drive nuisance types of crimes" from Downtown.

The DA's press release did not detail why other McDonald's are included in the crackdown, but police reports said a bus stop outside the Smithfield location has been used for drug transactions.
