Primer question
I recently purchased some CCI 500 small pistol primers from a gun shop that was going out of business. They had some old stuff there but the primers looked like the were relatively new from the condition of the box. I primed a 357 and poped it to make sure they would work before loading fifty. It went off alright but it backed out a little bit. I made sure that the pocket & flash hole were clean before seating. Any ideas why it backed out?
Thanks

Re: Primer question
Not enough recoil to push it back in. Nah, that ain't it.

Re: Primer question
Yeah, firing empty cases can do that.

Re: Primer question
Thanks for the responses. If it wasn't so late I would start loading a box. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Primer question
I have never had any trouble with CCI primer, I did have trouble with Rem. Primers once. Primers backing out would either be to much Presser or the pocket has been opened up to much. I use a primer pocket Swag on the Mil. Cases. for cleaning. I use RCBS wire brush type pocket cleaner that will not work the sides of the pocket.

Re: Primer question
Primers will back out from too low a pressure by themselves or with a very light powder charge. What happens there is not enough pressure to push the brass against the breech or recoil shield.
I've used CCI primers almost exclusively for about 35 years and they will back out with low pressure.

Re: Primer question
Remember, the flash hole is not the size of the primer and as such, if there is not enough pressure to force the case back to the recoil shield, holding the primer in, some of the pressure goes through the flash hole and some remains in the primer pocket and pushes it out a little.
