AR-15 Aftermarket Grips...which do you prefer? Pros/Cons?
I'm waiting on some lowers (from a group buy).
Once I build them up (2 will be Carbine/M-4 types, one will be a 20" and one will be some sort of a Target/Varmint rifle...probably with a bit longer barrel), I'll be thinking of what kind of aftermarket grips to put on.
The question mostly pertains to the Carbine Lengths.
I've used the standard A2 style that comes with the parts kits.
Never used the more common aftermarket grips...Hogue, Ergo, MagPul.
Does anyone have rifles with these installed....?
What do you think?
Any good/bad comments about them?
Needless to say, can't afford to spend $100+ on grips just to try them out.
Thanks!

love the houge overmold. the finger grooves fit me great, its VERY comfy and feels GREAT.
i cant think of any cons to it... but i also am not one of those guys who needs to put 3 more rounds or batteries in the grip... so... yeah...
oh, its inexpensive as well! This Space For Rent

I have one of those and feel like you need fingers like bananas to fill those grooves. Which is why two other rifles wear Ergo ambis (soft rubber). The Ergo is thinner and the grooves less pronounces, but still has a very solid grip.
Really, you probably need to try a couple to see what fits your hand best.

Magpul MIAD/MOE grips are what I prefer, ERGO would be second after that.

I used the A2 grip that came on my gun for a few months, then moved on to an ERGO grip. It felt better. But then I got a Magpul MIAD, and I'll never use another grip again.

I figured I'd have to look around and try the "feel" of the grip, but that doesn't tell "The Rest Of The Story" (to steal from Paul Harvey).
An example: When I first got into firearms (mostly handguns), I was given a chance to fire a Smith .357 (I think it was a 686) with a Hogue Monogrip....loved the feel of the grip, made it very instinctive to point, etc. I was going to put a Monogrip on everything I had...then someone pointed out that the rubber in the Monogrip was fairly sticky....if you want to carry a concealed firearm, the stickyness of the grip may cause the cover garment (shirt) to ride up and show off the CCW--something that you would not have thought of/seen if you were casually looking at a grip.
Thanks for the info..

I have a Hogue on one of my AR's and Ergo's on the rest. I have to agree with Lycan that the Hogue finger grooves are a bit....huge to say the least. The Ergo just feels better to me. That being said, everyone has different "ergomomics" and you may like the plastic feel of the Magpul the best.

I have a Hogue grip on my franken-AR (Bushie lower/LMT uppper) and really like it. And I have normal sized fingers - not banana fingers.
My Colt has the GI plastic grip and I think it feels crappy. Functional but definitely could be better. I am thinking of trying the MIAD (Basic) with the battery storage compartment. Looks like a good piece for a reasonable price. So this is how liberty dies...with thunderous applause.

I dont have an AR, but I do have lots of paintball guns that have M16 / AR style mounts. There are lots of options out there, my personal favorite is a 45 mount block. Gives you a 1911 grip, and mount a pair of houge wraps on there and you are set. They make them in plastic for AR's, and aluminum mainly for pb equipment (go figure...)
Tapco also makes a nice SAW grip, which I have on my AK, and love the feel. Its a tad on the rough side, but the design makes me thingk my grip will not faulter.
