Handgun Cleaning question
Okay, When your cleaning your barrel. After you use the solvent( i use hoppes #9) After your patches come out clean. I heard you DO NOT put a slight amount of oil/lube on a patch to lube up inside of your barrel. Is that correct? I also heard people say you do. On my hoppes gun lube. It tells you to lighty put some on the patch an run through the bore, To prevent rust. Since Im relatively new to owning/cleaning handguns. Im not sure if I should or not. Is it a matter of personal preference?

Re: Handgun Cleaning question
I run a patch with light oil on it as the last thing. It's the way I was told to do it and I see no harm. See the word light. If a firearm has been put away for a while, I'll run a few oil patches through it before I use it.

Re: Handgun Cleaning question
I use Hoppes #9 solvent, and then I always apply a light coat of Hoppes #9 oil after the barrel is clean.
Then, after the oiled patch, I push a couple more clean, dry patches through after the oil to take out any excess and leave only a very light coat to help prevent corrosion.
If you leave too much oil in the barrel it can adversely affect the accuracy of the first rounds fired
through the oily barrel.Last edited by skyjerk; February 19th, 2009 at 04:14 PM.

Re: Handgun Cleaning question
Yeah, I thought about doing that also. But, I wasnt sure. Because I saw someone in a youtube video saying DO NOT put any oil into the barrel. Because when your bullet comes out it leaves a tail of oil on it? But, its confusing the bottle of hoppes says to do it. An people say not to... I wasnt sure if it would make it fire different or not. But, I didnt really see no harm in it neither. Thanks guys

Re: Handgun Cleaning question
After thoroughly cleaning the barrel of any carbon/copper fouling I soak it in Prolix (see http://www.prolixlubricant.com/), remove it from its bath, let it dry a bit before wiping the outside and running one dry patch through the barrel. Prolix is an excellent lubricant (see http://www.chuckhawks.com/gun_cleaning.htm) and the beauty of it is that you can soak the whole firearm in it.
