Hospital Visitor Accidentally Shoots Himself
Police: Man Reached In Pocket To Get Money, Grabbed Gun Instead

LAFAYETTE, Colo. -- A visitor at Exempla Good Samaritan Medical Center in Lafayette accidentally shot himself with his own weapon when he reached into his pocket for his wallet.

Police said the incident occurred around noon in the hospital cafeteria.

Steve Tapp, 59, was paying for his food when he reached into his right pants pocket and accidentally pulled the trigger to his .32-caliber semi-automatic Kel-Tel brand pistol, Lafayette police Cmdr. Mark Battersby said.

The bullet struck the man in the right thigh.

Hospital security officers followed Tapp to the men's restroom, where he was disarmed, and quickly taken to the hospital's emergency room for treatment.

Lafayette police investigators also took Tapp into custody, for unlawful discharge of a firearm.

"No other guests in the cafeteria were hurt," said hospital spokeswoman Kim Kobel. "Police are on-scene and a full investigation is under way to understand what happened and to ensure the safety of our patients, visitors and staff."

She said she understood the Thornton man had a concealed carry permit.

Tapp was at the hospital visiting family members.
