New search sucks.

What seems strange about this search that is "Powered by Google™" is that it does not seem to work at all like the regular Google Search Engine where the most relevant terms to your search come up first.

Why is that??? I mean if it's "Powered by Google™" I would expect it to act the very same way only on a more localized (to this site) scale. But it does not

This is what I use with no problems. It`s a typical forum type search.

Sucks even worse than I thought because I just posted a duplicate thread I searched for a few different ways.

Getting a better search engine would save you mods alot of work closing duplicate shit.

Well, just make sure you select "PAFOA forum" from the dropdown list on the right. If you do "All PAFOA Sites" you will get a lot of garbage.



I normally find what I'm looking for, and it's 100x better than the vBulletin search within the forums.

Just going to go ahead and disagree as you can't filter the google search via subforum or by specific author or post content or title only or based on your "tags" for a thread or classified prefixes under a certain section or give it a date range or list results as posts or threads or or or or or

The problem is that there are often times when a simple search term (or terms) simply will not suffice and does not bring up the relevant data. For me it's crucial to do this.

I liken this to database queries as it's a similar concept.

If you're looking for something someone said in a post once and you know what subforum it was in and who said it but are having trouble finding it the google search is akin to

select * from posts where message like '%your search terms%'

whereas a more detailed search would be (pseudo table and column info)

select * from posts where author = 'kaos' and where subforum = 'rifles' and where message like '%you search terms%'

If we were talking about these particular processes running on a server the second would be more efficient, more concise and less taxing on the server.

The google search is used because it offloads the potential massive search queries that tap the db directly to google's search API...giving the PAFOA server's more breathing room.

I don't think there's any dispute (maybe other than a few folks) that the forum search is far superior, but it is with no doubt more taxing on the pafoa servers.
