Buying guns from 3rd parties

Hi all...

I live outside of PA but want to buy a gun from a friend who lives in PA.

It is a handgun, it is registered, etc. Can anyone tell me: what must I do to buy the gun? Or, is there a Website that has the information?

Have your friend ship the gun to a FFL holder in your area. You then go and transfer the gun into your name. Very simple to do, just go find a local dealer that will do the transfer for you.

Being in Mass, you need to be sure the gun is legal in your state before shipping.
I know your state has some commie handgun laws, know them BEFORE shipping.

Assuming you can legally own the firearm in question in your state, your PA friend will need to have an FFL holder in PA ship the handgun to a FFL holder in your state and you receive the handgun from the FFL holder in your state. Web site? two get invoved here. your home state laws and Federal Law (BATFE).

Good advice. We moved here a year ago and only live about 8 miles from New Hampshire...the more we learn about how invasive the laws are in this state, the more we kick ourselves sometimes for not moving a little farther north.

I'll handle it the way you described...the FFL up here should know any details that may prevent the transaction.

I'd like to help ya more, but I'm not sure of your laws myself.

I know in my dealer books when it lists a handgun it will read:

Mass compliant or Cal compliant or NY compliant...so much crap I can't keep up.

Just make sure the gun is Mass compliant before you do the deal.

No sweat...I was just hoping to get a little home security...our little city has hotspots of crime and some of it is burglary etc...just don't want to be flat-footed if the locks do not deter a bad guy.

You'd think with a state that has as much gun control as this one there'd be less violent crime...try Googling "Dorchester" and "murder" when you have a couple hours...obviously the problem isn't with controlling guns...

I'll dig deeper on this end and get to an answer about the sale/transfer.

I'm admit that I'm REALLY nitpicking here, but I have to say it. If the gun is owned by a PA resident, it's NOT registered, as there is no gun registry in PA. The PA State Police maintain sales records through the information provided to them by the FFLs throughout the state, but this is not technically a registry.

Sorry if I'm being a PITA, but this is one of those things where perception all too easily becomes reality if the facts aren't communicated.

I don't disagree with you at all. My point is that I personally don't want what we currently have to be called a registry, because if people start calling it such, it becomes one even if it's not: perception becomes reality.

However, also realize that what we currently have, because it's not technically a registry, is incomplete. In PA, long guns do not have to be transferred via an FFL; they can be, but it's not required.

And yes, this is a discussion for another topic
