Probably should have been posted in Firearms/Shotguns. I figure you're talking about shot like 0, 00, etc

Full choke is fine as far as I know. My first shotgun was a bolt action 16 ga with a full choke. I've shot 00 buck through it my first few deer hunting seasons and got my deer. A full choke compresses the shot as it comes out the barrel so that it doesn't spread as quickly and the pattern stays together as it goes out farther. I's no harder on a barrel that any other shot (that I've noticed).

I wouldn't use anything more than FULL choke - you'd seriously deform the buckshot. Depending on range, use a IMPROVED MODIFIED/MODIFIED to an IMPROVED CYLINDER/CYLINDER tube.

If your gun uses interchangeable choke tubes, never shoot it without a tube installed. You can damage the threading or fill them full of crap that can split the barrel or damage a tube when you install it.

I ran a pattern test awhile back since I had a bunch of #4 buckshot...full choke ended up overchoking the column and caused a spreading effect larger than desired
