Default Bolt action .410 will not eject

I am posting this hear because I do not know if this is an ammo or gunsmith question.

I am pulling guns out from the attic one at a time. This week was an old .410 bolt action. I properly disposed of the 25+ year old ammo and it ran fine. Then the gun got a thorough cleaning and oiling because it might be another 25 years before it is fired again.

I went out and bought some new ammo for it and it would not eject properly. I spent about 6 hours analyzing the problem. The extractors are not holding the rim of the shell tight enough to the bolt head for the ejector to do its job.

Do they make shells with a thicker rim? I hope

Can a gunsmith shorten my extractors? After looking at pictures online, http://www.e-gunparts.com/images/catalog/120500.jpg , I doubt it.

    Is there a simple fix?

What size of .410 are you using, 2 1/2 or 3 in. Some of the older ones only shot 2 1/2 in and using 3 in would mess them up. Something to check.

    The barrel is stamped 2 ½ / 3

After analyzing the action of every component, I am sure it is not holding the shells tight enough to the bolt. I am pissed I did not keep any of the old shells for comparison.

Cleaning it might have been a mistake. This always was a kick around gun and only the bore got cleaned. It even had hay in the feed mechanisms from my grandfather’s farm. Now that everything is moving freely and correctly, it is not tight enough.

I might buy new extractors if I can figure out how to get the old ones out.

18 and 19 are the extractors.

Without actually seeing it, I'm going to call it an extractor spring problem. It sounds like the tired springs aren't applying enough pressure to the extractors to make them grip properly. Are the extractors feeling sloppy when you try to move them by hand? (There should be some spring pressure to overcome if the springs are good.) Everything in the channels that they're located in may be just scuzzed up too.

I had to enlarge the pic to see well enough.

    Good luck.

I have a 59C that had the same problem, although it never worked for me from the day I got it. I ordered a new extractor (the 59C is one piece) from Numrich (aka www.e-gunparts.com ) and it fixed that problem, but now the bolt takes a good push to get it locked back in ready to fire. I'm hoping just a lot of oil and a lot of repetition opening and closing the bolt with some snap caps will loosen things up a bit.

If you do order from Numrich, expect to see the parts in the mail within a week. Those guys are awesome.

Default Am I a Gunsmith now?

After $50.00 in parts and about 20 hrs of labor, it works better than it ever did. The last shell will not eject but it never would.

Numrich was a great source of parts for a shotgun older than me.

A lot of effort for a shotgun that I will probably never use again and I couldn’t get $200.00 for, but the stories it could tell.

    Thanks for the help.

Good deal. If you find yourself never using it, I hope you have another generation to pass it on to. It may never be the perfect gun for anyone, but it's a great one for teaching the youngin's the fun of shooting sports.
