Shot my first M1 Garand match today!
At Tulpehocken Rifle and Pistol Club.
200 yards
5 sighter shots
20 slow fire prone
10 rapid fire prone
10 rapid fire sitting
10 slow fire offhand (standing)
Total of 50 scored shots, I scored 364 out of a possible 500, had 4 misses (outside of the 5-point ring). (If I could have put those 4 in the 5-ring at least, I could have had a 384 or better.)
This was my first time shooting in any match, first time shooting from 200 yards, opensights, first time handling any M1 (it was a club gun). It took about 15 shots to get the elevation set correctly, so my first 10 scored shots were a bit scattered up and down, but got it settled down then. I am pretty tickled with that score for a first time. I was in the middle of the pack, and some of the veterans said it was a real good score for a first timer.
Anyway, it was a blast, and a fun gun to shoot. Gotta love the "ping" when the clip ejects

I can't wait to shoot in one! I'm really looking forward to it. It will be a while though. However, I do get to do some iron sight shooting over the next couple weeks as I get to do the USMC rifle and pistol quals.

Where's Tulpehocken?
Im in Northumberland County and LOVE shooting Garand matches... Schuylkill County isnt such a bad drive from here..."The rifle is the weapon of democracy. If guns are outlawed, only the government will have guns. Only the police, the secret police, the military. The hired servants of our rulers. Only the government-and a few outlaws. I intend to be among the outlaws." (Edward Abbey, "The Right to Arms," Abbey's Road [New York, 1979])
I have my rifle. Do you?

Hey Rock-It3...I was there too. Pretty friggin cold. I was in Relay 2 on position 8. Where did you shoot? I scored a 340 and it was my first time at a competition shoot too. I had alot of fun despite the weather. My worst set was rapid fire sitting. Had trouble getting my 8-shot stringer in and got flustered. My first time loading an M1 but not the first time shooting it. Oh well...thats how you learn.

I didn't get cold until I was down in the pit w/ .30 cal rounds flying 4 feet over my head! I shot in relay 1, position 6. Are you related to Shakey? I talked w/ him a bit. He was in relay 1 pos. 8.
My worst was slow fire standing, 2 misses and a 5. Oh well, just gotta do it again and get better.
