Ages for Family Transfer / Legal Ownership

When my 18th rolls around, can my father give me a pistol(s)? I use them for Bullseye matches and they are from my Grandfather. Also what is the age for transferring long guns. On the same note, what about me transporting them? Next year I'm technically allowed to hunt on my own but can I transport and posses weapons while at the hunting grounds. They can't make laws simple, can they?

18 is the legal age of possession/ownership for handguns.

Those younger than 18 require supervision. To buy a handgun from a FFL or trasnfer through a FFL you must be 21. Transfers between spouses, parent/child, grandparent/grandchild don't need to be "transferred", and you may take possession at 18.


Those younger than 18, but 16yo or order, can possess long guns unsupervised for certain sporting purposes. No one really questions long gun gifts to those younger than 18. Those 18yo or older may buy a long gun from a FFL.

To transport a handgun in a vehicle at 18yo to a place of hunt/fish/trap/dog train - you will need a Sportsmans License. $7 at the county Treasurers Office, you must have your hunting/fishing license though.
