Default AR pistol vs. SBR, what are the differences?

I'd like to build an AR pistol. What parts can't it have that would make it an SBR? I know it can't have a buttstock, but what else?

A forward vertical grip would make it an AOW. Other than that there are no restrictions that I am aware of.

That's pretty much it. I believe putting a forward pistol grip on it would make it an AOW, but don't quote me on that.

You have to build it on a virgin stripped lower that was never assembled into a firearm before. Some dealers will specifically put "pistol receiver" on your paperwork.

I'd highly recommend you use an Ace buffer tube. I've also heard good things about Gunsmoke Enterprises buffer system. Feel free to PM me for more info.

+1. Same for an AK "pistol" - start with a virgin recvr and mark it as a pistol.
Such "pistols" are treated just like any pistol out there, but the AOW or SBRs fall under the NFA - the whole transfer tax, forms in duplicate, LEO sign-off business. Not always easy unless you live in the boonies or friendly sub-urbs.

I know that Anvil sells lowers specifically for pistol builds. The only problem I have with AR pistols are the buffer tubes sticking out. Just seems odd to me. Not like an AK or SIG 556 pistol where they are "flat". Although, it's real easy to add a stock to an AR pistol to make it a SBR. An AK pistol to SBR is a lot more work.

I've never built one but I have a Bush Carbon model on top with Eotech
personally it's kinda like you think you
    want one..,you get one..play with it..but
I don't find it as enjoyable as I thought I would
I need to add a laser so it can be shot from the hip accurately
It's kind of awkard not being able to shoulder it
but i got it, it's more of a conversation piece
    than anything

Build on stripped, virgin lower. Purchase and register as a pistol at purchase. Can only have a buffer tube, no stock. Cannot put a vertical grip on it if it: that makes it an AOW.

As noted, the AOW part is correct.
Building into a "firearm" part is partly correct.
It can never have been assembled into a RIFLE or title-2 firearm before. It most certainly could have been a pistol before.
Additionally, you CAN make a rifle (or receiver that was previously built into a rifle) in to a pistol on an approved ATF From-1.

Yep and it means absolutely nada as what the dealer writes in his book has nothing to do with what happens to the receiver when it leaves the shop. The law addresses the actual assembly, not the paperwork.
It's a common internet legend that this is somehow a protection. I feel it is not. Personally I would not bother nor care what it was logged as at the dealer. The manufacturer has the record of how it left the factory due to excise tax records.

Marking it as a "pistol" is NOT a requirement of law.
It is debatable if it is of any utility in that perhaps LEO would not question the legality if it is marked "pistol". Personally I do not know of any actual cases where this has benefited someone. No harm in doing it but again, just to clarify, it is NOT required per law.

There is no registration in Pa.

Just for the sake of curiosity... I know there are two different kinds of buffer tubes, one that can accept the stock, and one that cannot. Would there be complications associated with having a buffer tube on an AR-Pistol that could accept the butt stock? Just curious, I have no plans to have an AR pistol any time soon.

The issue would be that you would then be "readily able" to attach a stock, rendering it an SBR. I've heard of a lot of people wrapping paracord around a standard buffer tube to get around this. Not sure if it's legal, though.

On a side note, I'm building an SBR. Gotta read all the stickies in the NFA forum first, though.
