    Default Breaking News

hey it even made it to the front page on the WNEP website
    -------
A shooting range in Luzerne County reopened Thursday. The public shooting range is on state game lands outside Dupont.

State officials reopened the shooting range Thursday.

State officials and people living in the area braved the cold weather and blowing snow to officially reopen the range. It's something they said they're thrilled to have back.

With a shot fired, the state shooting range off Suscon Road in Jenkins Township reopened. It closed in 2005 because of safety concerns.

"There are some houses that were built and so the probability was very slight, but there were some upgrades that had to be made, so at the time, we had to publicly close the range," said Steve Schweitzer of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Game officials have put in new baffles, which keep shooters from firing above targets, a concrete slab, benches and a roof.

"They have an opportunity to come here in a really safe manner, to practice their shooting skills," said Jay Delaney of the game commission.

Sportsmen like Albert Tondora of Forty Fort said they're thrilled to have the place back. Before the range reopened, he said he had to drive 20 miles to get to a range.

"When it closed I was kind of devastated. I know a lot of the people were, because this is the only place where hunters or sportsmen or even gun enthusiasts can go and practice their sport or art."

The money for the fix-up at the shooting range came from the state Growing Greener fund.

I'm glad the range is open as I am only a few miles away.

I'm not sure about the "baffle" or whatever they call it designed to keep the shooter from shooting over the back stop. I'll have to check out the range in person then decide.

For rifle shooters, the range looks nice. I like the idea of a covered shooting area.

But once again, just like SGL #206 or #127......the PGC has done nothing for persons wanting to shoot with handguns. I'm pretty sure that when the WCO's qualify they shoot at something other than 25yds.

Would it really be that hard to build a decent handgun range with backers at 7, 15 and 25yds????

I would think it would be a lot easier to build and maintain than a rifle range.

    Talking Re: Breaking News

When lived in Avoca and had my retail storefront ( "Competitive Gunfire ), I used to RENT a lawnmower and go up to the range and cut the grass myself. I even repainted the crappy old benches once dark blood red.

Since I used the range myself and my customers could run over to it to try out their new purchases. I felt that I should give something back.

If, and when, I win the lottery, I'll be building and indoor range !! LOL

Here is a picture from today's (Sunday) Times-Leader. I don't see those hanging structures to be hanging around for very long.
