Norinco Hunter; to convert, or not to convert
I bought a Norinco Hunter, intending to do a galil-ish conversion. I guess I bought it two months ago or so for the tidy sum of $300. It looked like it had never been fired. It's really pleasant to shoot, I often wonder why people put recoil pads on AK's now.
I don't mind the normal stock or even the goofy trigger, but I really want an AK with a pistol grip and a folding stock. Underfolders get me pretty excited, I have to be honest. I also have to change the sights. I don't know why, but I cannot use peep sights to save my life. I need a V type rear sight, and would prefer to not mount a scope. I was thinking about cutting the current rear sight off, grinding it smooth, and putting a Remington 700 rear sight on. It looks really adjustable, I could dial it in.
I see them on Gunbroker going for way more money now, in excess of $500. I know GB isn't really a good reflection of a guns value, but still...
So, I don't know if I should bother messing with it now. I am going to have to make permanent modifications to the trigger guard to put the trigger in the proper place, so it won't be switched back easily. So besides that and needing to do something about the iron sight, I won't be making any permanent mods.
Any opinions? Should I sell this and just get an underfolder? The milled receiver on this is definitely a plus, and I know it's in good shape.
The rifle in question, so no one demands pictures later on.

if it were me, I'd keep it, and then keep it as is.

Keep that one as it is, and go buy another AK.

Someone would probably pay good money for an AK dustcover with a peep sight. Swap covers if you don't like.
Unfortunately you might have trouble finding furniture to fit your angled receiver. The only type stock/grip that I can think of are the old Robarms Vepr stocks. You still might be able to score one of those.
I dunno, you might just want to sell it then buy your perfect AK.

It looks great. I'd leave it as is, but that's just me.

I wouldn't convert it. Either sell it and buy what you want, or save it and put some more money together.
There are guys on the AK forum that would probably pay descent price or trade you for what you want.
If you still decide to convert, www.theakforum.com guys would know what parts you need.Adams County Sport Handgunners Association - President

Re: Norinco Hunter; to convert, or not to convert
I have someone working on a receiver adapter. Drawings are made and the material is set aside, I'm just waiting for them to go ahead and machine it. I got a used ACE modular buttstock folding mechanism from someone on the Saiga forums so I can put an ACE skeleton stock on it. After that, it's just changing the FCG and modifying the trigger guard.
I can't hit what I want to hit with the current peep sight arrangement, but if I aim at the same thing, I can get 1'' groups at 50 yards with it. I think that's respectable for an AK. That's part of the reason why I wanted to keep it and do the conversion. It wouldn't just be a scary evil rifle, but it would be accurate as well.
Maybe I'll save up and get an underfolder in the meantime. That may keep me from doing anything permanent to the rifle.
Anyone want to trade an underfolder for a stainless Taurus Tracker in .17hmr and a Mosin with an ATI scope mount kit installed?
