Default Question about "baby sitting" a friend's guns.

One of my friends is shipping out for a 12 month tour of duty in Iraq in January, and he wants me to keep and shoot his Colt AR and his Sig P229 while he's gone. Any legal issues to worry about?

If you have a LTCF and he's in the same state, you're OK. Anything else may pose problems.

    Affirmative on both counts. Thanks.

Only if you grow so fond of the guns and do not give them back to your friend

Id be careful about that part. Im sure since he will be just getting back from a warzone he will have access to a little more firepower than that.

Thanks guys. I wasn't too worried about the rifle, since no trasnfers are necessary. But are you guys sure we shouldn't do an FFL transfer on the pistol and then do another one back to him when he comes home?

You would do an FFL transfer on the handgun if ownership was changing. In this case it's not. You're only babysitting, not adopting.

That's correct, the UFA specifically excludes loans of handguns to people who possess current LTCF's, from the FFL transfer requirement.

If you plan on KEEPING the pistol..then a transfer would be necessary.

If you plan on returning the pistol...then it is a loan to you.

Since you have a LTCF...that is one of the perks. You may be the recipient of a loaned firearm.

God forbid anything happens to your friend while serving. It COULD get a little sticky from a transfer (not knowing familial relationships) to you perspective.

I would imagine that it would be turned over to his estate and could be transferred to you at that time. While not something I would dwell on, it is something to keep in mind.

That had certainly crossed my mind, although I tend to try to just not think about things like that. He works with radar/computers/etc and isn't front line infantry or anything, but you still never know what can happen.
