    Question Mosin 91/59?

My dad picked up a Mosin 91/59 in a FTF transaction at the Valley Forge gun show. Neither of us know much of anything about these guns. The guy he bought it from said he usually runs the lighter 147 grain ammo. As I look around though, it seems that most of the available ammo is 180 grain. Is there any problem running the 180 grain through this rifle?

Also, is there anything else I should tell him to be aware of?

    Thanks much,
    PC

    Hmmm,
I had never even heard of a 91/59 until now. It seems that they are cut down 91/30s from what I have read. I would check out the Mosin 91/30 section of surplus rifle to learn everything you need to know.

I think one of the more important items is learning to use the firing pin protrusion gauge, if your rifle came with one. If not, you can find them in various places on the net.

Shooting the heavier grain bullet will be just fine. It's still a Nagant and from my travels I believe that the 59 is a standard 91/30 cut down in 59 for redeployment in the puppet countries behind the iron curtian. It is more or less a 38 carbine but stamped 91/59.

JLR is right. The 91/59 is a cut down 91/30. The history or reason for this is unknown. But some believe it was "busy work" for the amories...but who knows. What is known is the fact that 91/59's are some of the nicest Mosins you can own and shoot. Most if not all look unissued and are nice shooters.

Mosins were designed for 147gr light ball ammo but will also shoot 180-200gr heavy ball with no problem. It comes down to what the rifle likes and your shoulder can stand.

    Enjoy!

I own a Mosin Nagant 91/59 for a few years now.It is the best shooting Mosin I have. It liked about all the light ball I fed it. Only shot Hungarian heavy ball and the gun did fine with it also. One bonus with short barrels is a great fireball.Usually turns a few heads at the range. Have fun with it!!!

If you like fireballs, try and get ahold of some blanks. You'll be giggling in no time!
