Can you go over what the range officer does and what he is in charge of?

    Thank you.

    Sure, OM

The NRA Range Safety Officer course prepares individuals over 21 and not prohibited from handling firearms to assist a range owner/operator or club to enforce the safety plan (range rules) of the range, in order to optimize safe operations and limit the excess liability (beyond the inherent risk of shooting a firearm)

Authority flows from the range owner/board through the safety plan/Standard operating procedure and chief RSO (if such appointed) to the individual RSO's in charge or or assisting a specific range activity.

RSO's are trained in NRA"s Three Rules of Gun Safety, the additional rules of use and storage of firearms, "customer relations", safe gun handling, range check in and safety inspection, range briefings, assisting a shooter with an ammunition or gun malfunction, talking such shooter through his dysfunction, relieving him of a loaded firearm if he cannot be 'talked down and through a safe remediation', how to plan for and respond to an "emergency" on the range (ND resulting in an injury, for example), and what to do with a loaded firearm when the cartridge cannot be extracted. Unloading/clearing various firearms (pistols, rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders, airguns, mag fed and elsewise) is a crucial part of the program.

While the "Range Owner" /Operator may ask an NRA RSO to run a match or act as a match official, this training is focused exclusively on safety and promotion of the range through largely gentle re-instruction and counseling backed by physical blocking of a firearm from a "sweep" while corrective actions are required. No DI/ A$$Wipe /chest thumping/ scream (besides "CEASE FIRE") in this course, and especially the way my team teaches it.

    Hope this helps.
